For all South African students, grade 10 is a crucial year. Students should be aware of the career path they want to follow after Grade 12 to make the best subject choices in Grade 10, even though their choices will depend on the subjects offered at their school. When choosing this crucial subject, students should consider their interests and future enrolment or career paths.
First and foremost, students should be aware that to be eligible for higher education and training programs, they must ensure they have the subjects necessary to fulfil the admission requirements. Of course, to pursue a degree, diploma, or certificate, the learner must choose subjects appropriate to the career they intend to follow, and they should try to keep their options open, as their plans may change as they go along.
When you enter Grade 10, the topics you choose must be related to the field of study you want to pursue as a career. Additionally, each path or area of study will have its own set of criteria for admission, which implies that you must perform at a particular level in specific disciplines. For instance, many qualifications require you to perform well in mathematics. However, you will need to reach a particular level for every course of study. Make sure you start putting in a lot of effort in every subject at the start of the year.
What role can parents’ play?
UASA encourages parents to discuss the various options with their child to ensure the appropriate subject choices are made. The learners’ future, particularly their job prospects, will be impacted by this crucial choice. Depending on their interests and potential job path, parents can help their kids choose their subjects.
Training is necessary for practically every profession. To continue their education and training, students must have specific subject combinations to be admitted to colleges and universities.
Given their children’s traits, goals and interests, parents should approach them with optimism. Guiding your child towards what they enjoy doing makes it easy for them to excel in those subjects and eventually produce good results.
We encourage parents to be transparent with their children, keeping in mind that there are various options for learners after completing Matric, and that all subject streams offer fair opportunities.
