UASA Media Release: 24 February 2023
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA welcomes the speedy appointment of Calib Cassim as interim Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at embattled state-owned enterprise Eskom as former CEO Andre de Ruyter takes his leave. Coming from within, Cassim understands Eskom’s challenges and that energy surety is a top priority for all of us.
UASA is pleased with Eskom’s decisive action in appointing the new interim CEO. Given the background and position that Cassim holds, we hope that the fight to root out corruption in the SEO will continue, ensuring proper administration and functioning of the enterprise.
As long as corruption is swept under the rug, whistle-blowers are threatened by those in power, and no one is held accountable for wrongdoing, South Africa is the pits. Our SOEs will continue to crumble while the nation’s future is becoming a vague, blurred vision.
UASA wishes Cassim god-speed on his new journey. We believe that with a large chunk of Eskom’s financial burden out of the way, Cassim will be able to concentrate on the desperately energy security solutions that we need.
UASA urges Cassim to do the right thing for our country and the future of the nation. We need you to turn around the enterprise. Be the hope for our dreams of a better, competitive economy like the one we once had.
