Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA is proud of the 600 jobs saved at Pan African Resources’ Barberton Mines after issuing a Section 189 notice in December last year.

The company also made a resolution and proposal for a full calendar operations (FULLCO) working system for the affected divisions and employees. After careful consideration and negotiation of the terms and conditions of the FULLCO system to ensure a zero job loss stance, an agreement between UASA and the company was signed on 27 January 2023.

Barberton Mines withdrew the Section 189 process notice as the parties agreed to the FULLCO working agreement. The agreement allows the company to create more jobs.

Given the tough economic challenges facing the South African workforce, sectors and industries, UASA is proud of its team’s hard work in achieving this milestone.

While South Africa’s economic challenges continue to put people’s jobs and livelihoods at risk, UASA’s core mandate remains to ensure that jobs are saved while striving for solutions that can assist companies to create more employment.

Once again, UASA is proud to be of service to its members.
