Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA welcomes the announcement of Wednesday, 29 May 2024, as the date of the national and provincial elections.
UASA reminds fellow South Africans to ensure that they are registered to vote and up to date on their districts, as they can only vote where they are eligible.
Let’s all put this public holiday to good use to make a difference by heading to the polls, remembering that this is an important election for the future of our country.
Building up to the election date, we urge citizens to research and inform themselves about the political sphere of our country. Voting is an opportunity for change and never a waste of time. Especially to the youth and first-time voters, casting your vote means actively observing your independence and ensuring that you are part of the change that you envision for your country.
Voting is more than casting an ‘X’ on a ballot paper:
• It gives you an opportunity to be part of decision-making that affects your life and the future of our country. If you don’t vote, others will make the decisions for you. Don’t give up your vote.
• You pay taxes, but do you know how that tax money is being spent? Most people don’t. Voting is your chance to choose how your taxes are spent – such as funding for social services, healthcare and schooling.
• Democracy only works if people participate. Unless you actively participate in the process by casting your vote, democracy doesn’t work.
Mark the date – and get ready to exercise your right to vote and choose the leaders of your choice. Be vocal and step forward.
