UASA Media Release: 24 April 2023
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA is pleased to have signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Writers Guild of South Africa (WGSA).
In terms of the agreement:
• WGSA members will now be able to join UASA and thereby qualify for all the rights and benefits of UASA members.
• The two parties acknowledge the need to work together for fair worker practice rights.
UASA is proud that its scope has evolved to include independent professionals in its membership portfolio. The freelance and contract worker economy has expanded considerably over the past decade, with independent professionals now representing a large section of the workforce.
Self-employed workers perform work for a variety of customers and may be in a position as precarious as that of other vulnerable workers. These workers need minimum socially-acceptable conditions and standards.
The Memorandum of Agreement makes provision that UASA will assists writers regarding work-related matters with the intention to achieve fair worker practices.
