Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA hosted an informative session on How to Survive as a Freelancer in the Arts and Entertainment Industry at Stellenbosch University on Monday afternoon.
The event drew a diverse crowd of aspiring students from the Faculty of Arts eager to gain valuable insights and practical advice for thriving in the competitive arts and entertainment sector.
The session featured a panel of industry experts including veteran actor Tobie Cronje’, UASA representative for the Arts and Entertainment sector Amor Tredoux, and UASA’s legal officer Janek Wilimiec, who shared their experiences, strategies and tips for building a sustainable freelance career. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and network with peers and mentors.
Highlights included a memory lane session with Cronje’ who advised attendees about the realities and struggles of the entertainment industry and shared personal success stories, offering a wealth of knowledge. Tredoux explained how upcoming professionals can establish their careers in the sector, source work and align their portfolios with reputable agents.
Concluding the presentation, Wilimiec defined comprehensive guidance on the legal aspects of freelancing, including contract negotiations and intellectual property rights. He further guided the participants on the UASA Independent Professionals service offering for the arts and entertainment professionals.
UASA launched its Independent Professionals and Arts and Entertainment sectors to broaden its service offering to include legal assistance and other related benefits to the professionals in the sector.
UASA aims to empower freelancers with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, and we are proud to see many young professionals involved and equipped to take their careers to the next level.
