Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
The UASA Minerals Division team is pleased to participate in the 2026 Mine Health and Safety Tripartite Summit, taking place at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg until tomorrow.
The summit brings together government, organised labour, employers and stakeholders to assess progress on mine health and safety, discuss challenges facing the South African mining industry and share best practices to advance the sector’s Zero Harm vision.
Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, delivered the keynote address at the summit opening, under the theme, “Every Mineworker returning from work unharmed every day.”
The UASA Minerals Division looks forward to insightful discussions on workplace health and safety, innovation, accountability, industry growth and long-term sustainability.
As the summit focuses on the continued drive towards Zero Harm and ensuring the health and safety of every mineworker remains at the centre of decisions affecting the industry, UASA believes a sustainable mining industry must also be a safe mining industry.
Every mineworker should be able to go to work knowing that all stakeholders are committed to ensuring they return home unharmed at the end of every working day.
