UASA Sector News: 22 May 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA express its heartfelt gratitude to President Carike Van Aswegen-Pienaar for her leadership and hard work on behalf of the organisation, as she has announced her resignation.

Carike has stepped down from her position following developments at Ekapa, where she was employed. Due to the company undergoing liquidation, she will no longer be able to continue serving as President in accordance with UASA’s constitutional mandate.

Her election at UASA’s 8th National Congress in 2025 was a proud and defining moment for the union, as it marked the introduction of its first-ever all-female leadership team. This was a significant milestone that reflected UASA’s commitment to equality and inclusive leadership.

UASA express sincere gratitude to Carike for her dedication, integrity and the meaningful contributions she made while leading the union with purpose and commitment.

We thank our members for their trust and confidence in the organisation’s leadership. The union will follow its constitutional practices for new leadership election.

We wish Carike great success as she embarks on her next chapter.
