UASA Media Release: 06 June 2023
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
Given the country’s tough economic challenges and massive unemployment, the slight increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 0.4% in the first quarter of 2023 was as expected and indicates the massive challenges we are facing.
The slight increase in the GDP does not mean much in the face of the risk the energy crisis poses and which is not showing any signs of improvement.
The primary contributing industries to the GDP were manufacturing, finance, real estate and business services, personal services, transport, storage, communication, land transport, air transport, transport support services, communication services, and trade, catering and accommodation.
Amidst all, we cannot let our hope crumble. At the same time, we cannot survive on hope and resilience alone while the situation surrounding us worsens. Increasingly people can’t make ends meet and live on the cusp of poverty. UASA urges government to present sustainable ways to help grow our economy. Job creation should top that list.
