Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
The South African workforce outlook reminds us that World Day for Decent Work is more important than ever! This special day serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to advocate for employment that is not only productive but also fair and equitable, respecting the rights and dignity of every worker.
Current labour statistics paint a challenging picture, with millions of South Africans facing unemployment and a highly competitive job market. The struggles these individuals experience go far beyond what the numbers reflect; they are battling poverty and doing their best to support their families.
On this World Day for Decent Work, UASA proudly stands in solidarity with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in calling for a government that prioritises decent work for all. It’s time for urgent action to counter the corporate influence that undermines public policy and the well-being of our citizens.
We envision a government dedicated to tackling the root causes of inequality, conflict, and social strife, ensuring it serves the interests of all people rather than a select few. We must reject any system where power and privilege dictate the terms of our economy and society. We must work together to restore a government that is truly democratic and committed to its people.
UASA firmly condemns corruption and inefficiency within government, which significantly contribute to the high unemployment crisis we are grappling with. We need a government that values accountability and transparency in its actions, paving the way for increased private sector investments. Such a government can lead the charge in creating new job opportunities and reviving our economy.
As Luc Triangle, the General Secretary of ITUC, aptly said, “The struggle for decent work is inseparable from the fight for real democracy. This World Day for Decent Work, workers are saying: Enough is enough—we demand a democracy that delivers.”
UASA calls upon its members and all workers to unite in the fight for decent work, to stand firm against discrimination, inequality, and unfair labour practices, and to advocate for just and respectful working conditions.
Let us celebrate World Day for Decent Work together on 7 October, embracing the hope and determination to create a brighter future for all workers!
