Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA confirmed its commitment to fostering growth and sustainability in the workplace at its 8th National Congress with the constructive theme: “The Future We Want”.
At the congress, at Misty Hills Conference Centre in Krugersdorp, Prof. Deon Tustin, Head of the Bureau of Market Research (BMR), emphasised that equality, fairness, inclusivity, and transformation must form the foundation for future economic growth and employment.
In his keynote address, Tustin presented significant economic findings and simplified labour projections, aligning them with UASA’s core values and the organisation’s mandate to benefit its members.
The two-day event will address industry challenges and solutions in the post-COVID-19 world, including unemployment issues and the resolutions that will shape UASA and its leadership for the next four years.
In her opening address, UASA President Patience Mapitsi reminded delegates that the challenges have not ended with the pandemic. South Africa continues to face alarmingly high unemployment rates, rising inequality – especially among women and youth – and economic growth that often falls short of what South Africans deserve.
Looking ahead, Mapitsi stressed the urgent need for the labour force to remain relevant and practical by embracing innovation rather than resisting it, due to the changes brought about by technological advancements.
FEDUSA President Godfrey Selematsela called for courage within the labour movement, reminding leaders and delegates that the desired future must not involve the erosion of the dignity of labour or the disposability of workers. “True unionism is about purpose and principles and a future where workers are at the centre of economic growth,” said Selematsela.
IndustriALL Global Union General Secretary Atle Høie addressed global challenges that hinder progress in the workplace across many countries. He called for peace in workplaces and denounced discrimination, sexual harassment, and inequality—issues that continue to derail growth and sustainability.
Høie also expressed concern over the high unemployment rate in South Africa, urging the government, stakeholders, business partners, and leaders to collaborate with private sector employers to create sustainable employment opportunities.
Over the two days of the congress, UASA looks forward to delegates discussing resolutions, solutions, and the future direction of the organisation. By working together, UASA believes more can be done to protect the future of work for its members and all workers who contribute to the growth and sustainability of our economy and sectors.
UASA chief executive officer Jacques Hugo wishes all delegates, leaders, stakeholders and partners a productive and successful 8th UASA National Congress.
