Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
The State of the Nation Address (SONA), coinciding with the conclusion of the Mining Indaba, highlights for Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa the urgent need for job creation and sustainability in South Africa.
The annual collaboration among stakeholders, employers and investors at the Mining Indaba demonstrates the importance of job sustainability and growth in the mining sector and the broader economy.
As the president addresses the nation tomorrow, we hope he considers the daily realities faced by ordinary South Africans. We urge him to present concrete plans that address the high cost of living, unemployment, water and electricity shortages in disadvantaged areas and limited access to education and health services.
Consumer well-being should be a government priority. This includes both hardworking taxpayers and those who rely on government grants for income.
Immediate relief is needed to protect consumers from the impact of inflation on essentials such as food, basic services, fuel, water and electricity. Rising costs force many to seek alternative means of survival, often resulting in increased debt.
Ongoing failures in water and electricity infrastructure continue to threaten municipalities and the national grid. Millions still lack access to clean running water. The deteriorating state of roads, abandoned buildings, schools, and clinics underscores the need for proper maintenance. Without sustained investment, progress will be hindered by costly repairs. We urge the president to implement strict regulations on municipal budgets and operations to ensure efficient and timely service delivery.
The unemployment crisis has contributed to rising crime rates, posing high costs and risks to society. We also urge the government to implement
measures to improve the efficiency of the education and health departments and ensure uninterrupted services.
As the president reviews progress since the 2025 address, we hope he incorporates the Madlanga Commission’s findings into plans to address corruption and the mismanagement of state funds.
Mismanagement of funds by those in power is an economic crisis, as resources meant for essential services are misused, causing hardship for ordinary South Africans. Whistle-blowers also face threats to their safety. We must ensure the law protects all citizens to restore trust and accountability.
We remind all South Africans that no one is above the law. We urge the president to introduce measures that strengthen law enforcement and ensure accountability.
UASA reminds the president that the time for reflection has passed. We need decisive interventions to address the daily challenges facing our country. SONA 2026 must provide a constructive plan that delivers real progress and growth for all South Africans.
