Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

The 2026 Mining Indaba, Africa’s leading mining event, is currently underway in Cape Town. This platform brings together investors, stakeholders, employers, labour, and government to advance the sector.

UASA is pleased to participate in this influential event, which offers valuable knowledge and insights into the mining sector, a key economic driver in many countries. Held under the theme ‘Protect, Transform and Sustain,’ the Indaba focuses on responsible mineral development, investment opportunities and policy certainty across the continent.

Until Thursday, the Indaba will address key issues including mineral development, infrastructure, policy direction, illegal mining and investor confidence. We also look forward to the government’s address on health and safety challenges in the sector. We hope to see innovative solutions to address the ongoing challenges of underground worker fatalities and injuries in the mining sector.

UASA believes the Mining Indaba is essential for the growth and sustainability of mining, a key sector in South Africa and across the continent. The progress achieved through past Indaba conferences has been remarkable for the industry.

UASA is proud to contribute to the Mining Indaba and to gain insights into industry trends and discussions that help us better serve our members.
