Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA

It is with great sadness that UASA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the late David Dabede Mabuza, as well as to fellow South Africans during this time of national mourning.

The former deputy president passed away at the age of 64 after battling illness for a while. He served as Deputy President from February 2018 to March 2023.

Mabuza served the nation with distinction, rising from humble beginnings. His journey from educator to Premier and eventually Deputy President of the Republic stands as a testament to his commitment to public service and the values of democracy.

His journey was one marked by survival, both politically and physically. He battled health complications with courage and dignity, choosing to step down from public office in 2023 to focus on his well-being and his family.

We recognise his significant contribution to the country’s democratic development and his years of service to the people of the Rainbow Nation.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
