Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA welcomes the appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa as the President-elect of South Africa following a vote by the members of parliament at the first sitting of the National Assembly at the Western Cape Provincial Parliament yesterday.

This significant result marks the beginning of a new chapter for our nation. It symbolises the strength of South Africa’s democracy and the peaceful
transition of power as the Government of National Unity (GNU) takes shape.

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) signed a framework agreement, including the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), to form a
GNU.

With renewed hope for progress and prosperity, President Ramaphosa leads a second term in office. UASA is hopeful about the dawn of this new era,
hoping that the new government will collectively give South Africans a better future through concerted efforts and a shared commitment to national development.

Members of Parliament of the National Assembly were also officially sworn in at the first sitting of the National Assembly. As we welcome this new era, UASA calls on all South Africans to unite and work together towards the
collective goal of a thriving and equitable nation.
