Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA is pleased to have successfully concluded the wage negotiations by signing an agreement with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA).
According to the three (3) year agreement, based on the current scheduled rates, employees will receive a 6 – 7% increase from 1 July 2024 which will be for the first year which will serve as an important increase on the baseline for future increases.
The agreement was concluded between employer representative SEIFSA and labour organisations, UASA, NUMSA, SAEWA, and MEWUSA. The NUM announced they were still busy with their mandating process.
UASA is pleased and proud of its members for their understanding of industry interests and for enabling the union to conclude an agreement on member mandates that is in their best interest before the 2021-2023 Collective Main Agreement expires on 30 June 2024.
The wage agreement was concluded after four official party meetings under the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) Scope. UASA believes this collective agreement will assist our members by supporting their economic position in the future.
