UASA Media Release: 26 April 2023
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA is pleased to have negotiated and concluded a one-year wage increase agreement with the Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Employers Association.
The agreement will be effective from 1 April 2023 and it covers all employees in the Bargaining unit (A2 – C3) of the National Bargaining Council for the Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Industry.
The wage increase is 7% across the board, effective April 2023, with a further 0.5% increase effective from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024.
UASA is proud of its operational manager Adolphus Nzama and shop stewards involved in this achievement, over and above the challenge of six mills affected by the business rescue operations of Tongaat Hulett and Gledhow Sugar Company.
The sugar industry has been plagued by unrest and natural disasters in Kwa-Zulu Natal recently, leading to diminished job security and production.
Given the current economic circumstances, UASA is proud to be associated with a sector that considers its workers’ financial needs and well-being. We believe that this wage agreement will undoubtedly assist our members greatly.
