UASA Sector News: 12 July 2024
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA, as part of organised labour, is proud to announce the successful negotiation and conclusion of a commendable salary and wage collective agreement with the seven water boards under the auspices of the Amanzi Bargaining Council (ABC).
Given the current economic pressures, we are particularly pleased to have secured a substantial wage increase for our members. This significant increase, alongside an enhanced housing allowance now set at R3,700 per month per employee, will play a crucial role in bolstering the livelihoods of workers and their families. Additionally, all employees within the ABC bargaining unit will enjoy an increased annual leave entitlement of 30 days.
The parties have also committed to ongoing discussions on critical issues, including pay progression, post-retirement medical aid, and the introduction of a remote work policy. These water boards are collectively responsible for over 95% of bulk water provision in the country.
Based on the mandates provided by our members and supported by UASA’s comprehensive collective bargaining research, we are proud to have achieved such a beneficial agreement for a sector comprising approximately 5,000 workers under the Amanzi Bargaining Council.
This agreement underscores our commitment to improving the working conditions and benefits for all our members in the water sector, providing much-needed support and security during these economically challenging times.
