UASA Media Release: 29 April 2024
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
On Workers’ Day, we celebrate all workers and their contribution to national economies. To commemorate Worker’s Day on 1 May 2024, UASA recognises its members and all workers across the board. We pay gratitude to their dedication and contributions to the workforce. We also remember labour organisations that continue to fight for worker’s rights, protecting workers against harsh working conditions and discrimination, and those who advocate for fairness and equality for all workers.
During this collective bargaining season, we call on labour and employers to work together on a common goal towards workers’ advancement while being mindful of economic growth and industries’ prosperity.
We also remind employers, labour organisations, stakeholders and policymakers to keep in mind climate change effects and explore its impact on occupational health and safety. Addressing climate change challenges and seeking a way forward on Just Transition sustainability, inclusive economies, and labour protection is essential to ensure that we protect workers in all spheres.
We continue the agenda and struggle for better and safer work environments for all workers. Job security is crucial, and it is up to us to hold employers accountable and ensure they play their part in securing viable jobs for the future.
On this Worker’s Day, UASA prides itself on its resilience, contribution and dedication to the South African Labour force. 2024 marks 130 years of UASA’s existence, making the union one of the country’s longest-standing trade unions. We are proud of our transformation and journey in the trade union sphere of South Africa. Experience, knowledge, and trust from our members have allowed us to remain committed to serving the interests and rights of all workers in the best way.
We pay tribute to our members for their continued support and for keeping the organisation relevant while navigating the evolution of the workforce and the world of work. We wish our members and all workers a happy Worker’s Day.
UASA is an affiliate of the Federations of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA), the second-largest federation in the country, boasting a membership footprint of over 610,000 members and 21 affiliated trade unions.
