UASA Media Release: 18 August 2023

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA held a hybrid meeting with its members and professionals in the Arts and Entertainment Industry this week to establish the Arts and Entertainment Sector.

During the meeting discussions were held regarding the proposed Sectoral Determination by the Department of Employment and Labour for the Arts and Entertainment Industry. The meeting elected a Co-coordinator from the membership. Veteran actor Hans Strydom was elected as Co-coordinator for UASA’s Arts and Entertainment Industry.

UASA is in the process to broaden its structure to include all Arts and Entertainment Professionals such as actors, directors, writers and crew working behind the camera.

Arts and Entertainment is an ever-growing industry with a considerable footprint spanning film, television, radio, print and social media. The sector plays an essential role in society. UASA has for the past decade represented and advised Professionals in this industry and is proud to be actively involved in the industry.

UASA has extended its membership benefits to include legal assistance to all Professionals in the Arts and Entertainment Industry in the event of contractual disputes.

UASA’s CEO Jacques Hugo announced earlier today that UASA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) today approved the new sector and structure and is excited to offer its many benefits and protection to all Professional Performers who earn their living in this significant economic sector.
