Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA demonstrated its commitment to women empowerment, gender and workplace equality by attending a National Women’s Day seminar hosted by the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) at Gaggle Inn Lodge in Kroonstad. The event, dedicated to raising awareness about the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Convention C190, also served as a platform to honour the remarkable achievements and contributions of fellow women in society and the economy.

ILO Convention C190, adopted in 2019, is a ground-breaking international pact aimed at eliminating violence and harassment in the world of work. It recognises the right of everyone to work in an environment free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence.

For UASA, supporting and promoting the convention is critical to ensuring safer workplaces, especially for UASA female members and all women who are highly affected by these issues as they work in male-dominated industries.

During the seminar, FEDUSA Social Justice Officer Brenda Modise highlighted the importance of C190 in the South African context, where gender-based violence remains a significant challenge both inside and outside the workplace.

Modise reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to working with stakeholders, government, labour organisations and civil society to ensure that the convention is not just a law on paper but a fully practised law that helps protect women and young children in society and at work.

In addition to focusing on workplace violence and harassment, the seminar celebrated women’s contributions and achievements across various sectors and economic growth. UASA’s participation in the seminar is part of its broader strategy to promote gender equality and protect the rights of all workers.

The union has consistently advocated for fair treatment, equal opportunities, and the eradication of discrimination in the workplace. By supporting initiatives like the ILO Convention C190 and celebrating the successes of women, UASA is helping to build a more inclusive and equitable society.

The seminar concluded with a call to action for all unions, employers, and policymakers to intensify their efforts in implementing the principles of C190 and to continue supporting women in their journey toward equality and recognition at all levels.

The seminar was a celebration and reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve true gender equality in South Africa. With the support of FEDUSA, UASA is determined to recognise women’s rights not just in the workplace and society during Women’s Month but also in society daily.

In conclusion, UASA recognises and congratulates all women in South Africa for their hard work and achievements in society and the economy.
