UASA Media Release: 28 July 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of three mineworkers at operations in Rustenburg, including two workers at Impala Platinum Mine and one worker at Valterra Platinum’s Tumela Mine. We extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.

These unfortunate incidents serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing health and safety challenges facing South Africa’s mining industry. Despite continued efforts to improve workplace safety, fatal accidents remain a serious concern that demands constant vigilance and decisive action from all industry stakeholders.

UASA welcomes the actions taken by both mining companies in response to these incidents. Impala Platinum’s decision to suspend mining production in the affected areas to conduct a comprehensive review of safety measures, while retaining all locomotive and rail equipment operators, demonstrates a commitment to prioritising worker safety. Similarly, Valterra Platinum’s decision to withdraw employees from underground working areas and halt operations in the affected section is a responsible step towards ensuring the wellbeing of its workforce.

Three fatalities within a single month are three too many. These incidents highlight the persistent risks associated with mining activities and underscore the urgent need for continued improvements in safety management, risk mitigation, and operational oversight throughout the sector.

While UASA acknowledges the efforts undertaken by employers, industry stakeholders, and labour representatives to improve safety standards, we also urge workers to remain vigilant, adhere strictly to established safety procedures, and comply with all protocols designed to protect lives underground and in the workplace.

Creating safer working environments requires a collective commitment. Employers and employees must work together to identify hazards, minimise risks, and foster a culture in which safety remains the highest priority at all times.

UASA remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance health and safety in the mining sector and prevent further loss of life.
