UASA Sector News: 18 February 2025

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA condemns the tragic incident that took place at Gledhow Sugar Company, where our member Thembinkosi Mlangeni was shot and killed shortly after clocking off from work.

The victim, a dedicated employee and valued member of UASA, was gunned down in a shocking act of violence that has left the community and workplace in mourning. UASA extends heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s bereaved family, friends and colleagues.

This tragic event highlights a concern over the safety of workers beyond the workplace. Employees should not fear for their lives after a day’s work, and UASA calls on the South African Police Services (SAPS) and relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

As we mourn the passing of our member, UASA appeals to Gledhow management, employees, and community members to unite and take action to combat crime and ensure a safe work environment and community for everyone.

UASA condemns this brutal act of violence in the strongest possible terms and will not rest until justice is served.
