UASA Media Release: 17 February 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA is deeply concerned for the five mineworkers who remain unaccounted for after this morning’s mudslide at the Ekapa Mining Joint Shaft in Kimberley.

While we hope for the safe return of the affected workers, UASA urges the mine to provide immediate emergency assistance to rescue those trapped underground.

The accident occurred approximately 890 metres underground in Tunnel 6.

Despite safety measures, mining remains a dangerous and challenging profession and workers’ lives continue to be at risk.

Incidents like this should serve as a reminder to the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, that achieving ‘Zero harm in our lifetime’ in the mining industry remains a significant challenge.

UASA reminds government, stakeholders, partners and employers of the importance of achieving ‘Zero harm’ in the industry. Each fatality or injury results in the loss of financial stability and livelihood for families who depend on these workers.

UASA stands in full support of Ekapa Mine and the affected workers during this difficult time.

We urge the Mine Health and Safety Council, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) and all stakeholders to assist Ekapa Mine. Worker safety remains our top priority.
