Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA as part of organised labour and stakeholders attended the Harmony Gold CEO Breakfast session, where significant developments about the company’s operations and labour agreements were discussed earlier today.
During the session, Harmony Gold Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Beyers Nel addressed labour representatives. He sincerely acknowledged and expressed gratitude to the employees (our members) for their hard work and dedication to Harmony over the years.
The session also emphasised Harmony’s ongoing role in South Africa’s gold production, with an impressive 85% of the company’s production still based in the country. Long-standing operations at the company’s mines, including Mponeng (20 years), Moab Khotsong (20 years), and Stillfontein – Kusasalethu (16 years), were acknowledged as key contributors to Harmony’s sustained output.
CEO Nel further reassured labour and stakeholders that Harmony’s older mines remain operational and sustainable. As we observe World Health Day today, Nel emphasised that workers’ safety remains a top priority for the organisation. He explained that cost considerations will not compromise safety and production – “if it’s necessary to save a life, the cost is irrelevant.”
Outlining the structural leadership operations, the Group Deputy CEO, Floyd Masemula, will focus on local operations in South Africa while Nel shifts focus towards international operations.
The engagement marks another milestone in UASA’s continued commitment to fostering dialogue between labour and mining leadership in South Africa. We welcome the open engagement with Harmony Gold and will continue to advocate for the rights and safety of our members across the mining sector.
