Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA successfully hosted a Training and Sector Meeting for the Sugar Sector at the Riverside Hotel in Durban. Shop Stewards from across the sector attended the training to strengthen their knowledge and practical understanding of labour relations.
Commissioners Mbuli Mbusi and Zed Cassim facilitated the training.
Commissioner Mbusi, facilitated an insightful session on disciplinary hearings and grievance procedures, providing delegates with practical guidance on handling workplace disputes, ensuring procedural fairness and protecting the rights of employees throughout disciplinary processes.
Commissioner Cassim presented a comprehensive session on job grading, enabling shop stewards to understand better job evaluation principles, grading structures, and the importance of fair and equitable remuneration practices.
The Sugar Sector remains one of South Africa’s most important agricultural industries, supporting thousands of workers, growers, suppliers and rural communities. However, the industry has experienced considerable uncertainty in recent years, particularly following the financial distress and business rescue proceedings involving Tongaat Hulett.
While the recent agreement between the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the Vision Group and the business rescue practitioners has provided renewed hope by averting liquidation and protecting jobs across the sugar value chain, the sector continues to require strong workplace representation and informed leadership.
UASA extends its appreciation to the Commissioners for sharing their expertise and contributing to the success of the training. Their knowledge and practical insights have further strengthened the capacity of UASA’s Sugar Sector representatives to serve members with professionalism and excellence.
