UASA Media Release: 26 June 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA welcomes Samancor Chrome’s immediate withdrawal of the Section 189A notice, which was previously issued due to operational challenges related to high electricity costs.

Samancor Chrome informed organised labour and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) of the withdrawal of the Section 189A request, and requested that the CCMA formally close the file on the subsequent facilitation proceedings.

This decision follows the company’s successful engagement with both Eskom and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), which provided constructive feedback regarding Eskom’s 62c/kWh tariff deal.

While the company is finalising its revised smelting production strategy and operational restart plan, UASA is pleased that its members and all workers’ jobs which were under threat have been restored.

UASA acknowledges the CCMA facilitators for their guidance, organised labour and Samancor Chrome leadership for their constructive engagement during this challenging period and that the outcome of the engagements was positive.

We are grateful for the jobs and livelihoods that were saved. We encourage other organisations to take note and consider constructive engagements whenever challenges arise.

Saving jobs and ensuring that economic activities remain uninterrupted is important.
