UASA Sector News: 6 June 2025

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA welcomes the completion of the demerger of Valterra Platinum, formerly known as Anglo-American Platinum (Amplats). This strategic development, effective May 31, 2025, marks a significant transformation in the platinum sector, presenting exciting new opportunities for both the company and its workforce.

The listing of Valterra Platinum as an independent entity on both the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) is a significant milestone for the industry. UASA commends the company for this achievement, which positions Valterra Platinum to innovate, grow, and respond more effectively to the evolving needs of its business, stakeholders, and employees.

This demerger is not merely a structural change; it is a potential catalyst for job creation, skills development, and a renewed focus on safety and operational excellence. As Valterra Platinum continues its journey, UASA calls on the company to uphold the values of fair labour practices, inclusive growth, and transparent engagement with workers and labour.

Nolitha Fakude, Chair of Anglo American’s South African Management Board, reiterated the strategic importance of this demerger for both companies and South Africa’s mining future. “As we embark on this new chapter, creating yet another standalone national mining champion in the country, Anglo-American’s commitment to South Africa remains unwavering.”

UASA is confident that Valterra Platinum will add substantial value to the sector and the country’s economy. We wish them success under the leadership of CEO Craig Miller and Chairman Norman Mbazima. UASA looks forward to playing a constructive role in shaping this new era for platinum mining in South Africa.

At the company’s launch event, UASA Operational Manager (Minerals Division) Poena Siemens emphasised the need for workers, stakeholders, and employers to collectively embrace this new chapter. On behalf of UASA, Siemens congratulated Valterra Platinum, wishing the company the best in its future endeavours.
