Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA sincerely congratulates His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa on his inauguration as the President of the Republic of South Africa’s seventh administration.
In his opening statement, President Ramaphosa expressed that this is “the beginning of a new chapter for South Africa,” calling on parties that will form the Government of National Unity (GNU) to put political animosity aside and work together for the sake of South Africa. This new administration will significantly differ from previous ones, as no single party has obtained a majority to govern independently, thus relying on co-governing agreements.
Mr. President, we recall your past promises, made with the best intentions, to address the pressing issues of our nation. Years later, your people are still suffering from high unemployment rates, crime, social and economic challenges that hinder their well-being with little to no hope for a better future. We trust that you will hold yourself accountable to these commitments and work tirelessly to fulfil them.
As you reiterated, “the people of South Africa have spoken. They want us to put their needs and aspirations first and work together for the sake of the country.” We believe that the GNU will remain dedicated to its commitment to achieving economic growth, social justice, and sustainable development.
With the President’s upcoming appointments to the National Executive, we are optimistic about the future. We anticipate a cabinet that is not only practical but also high-performing, leading to improved service delivery and a thriving economy. Our people want to see progress and efficiency with good leadership that serves the citizens to the best of its ability.
