UASA Media Release: 05 February 2025
UASA Divisional Manager (Minerals Division): Nico van Rooyen at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town.
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
The world’s biggest annual mining event, the Mining Indaba, started on Monday in Cape Town under the theme “Future Proofing African Mining Today”, and UASA is proud to be a part of it.
In 2024, the mining sector contributed 4.5% to total formal sector employment, with an average of 474,876 employed individuals in the first three quarters of 2024. This highlights the prominent role played by the mining industry in South Africa.
Industry experts, stakeholders, the government, and employers strategically discussed topics, including ‘zero harm’ regarding the health and safety of industry workers.
Stakeholders at the Indaba believe that the event will significantly boost South Africa’s economic activities ahead of the Group of 20 (G20) Summit, which will bring together business leaders from the G20 and beyond.
Following the health and safety statistics released by Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe last month, the government kept its promise to ensure that the mining industry is protected and performs to the best of its ability. UASA is pleased to witness the progress made in the industry, proving that the future of workers is protected.
As a member-driven organisation, UASA is proud to be allowed to contribute to the Mining Indaba while gaining insight into industry trends and dialogues that can help us serve our members better.
