UASA Media Release: 13 June 2025
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on the National Dialogue is a welcome decision, though it may be somewhat out of touch with reality, as fellow South Africans continue to face challenges that hinder growth.
We hope that the Eminent Persons Group, which will lead the National Dialogue, will address the challenges of persistently high unemployment, inequality, and socio-economic difficulties and help the government develop viable solutions to overcome this national crisis.
While the Eminent Persons Group comprises notable leaders who have greatly contributed to society and the economy, where are the young people who face the daily challenges of unemployment and inequality? We want to see the young unemployed youth contributing to these dialogues, sharing their innovative ideas to help shape our future, the same way the youth of 1976 fought the apartheid system.
We acknowledge the contributions made by the youth of 1976 in ending apartheid and shaping democracy into a reality for the new generation. This is why we need the current generation on such platforms; it is time for the current youth to lead the way and be part of the solutions for the next generation.
We encourage the government to establish a forum for graduates actively engaged in economic activities and job seekers to address real-life challenges. While experience, knowledge, and wisdom are important, some proactive solutions come from those who live by the realities and challenges of daily life.
It is essential to discuss practical and effective solutions that involve young people in policymaking and decision-making, where their perspectives and ideas are considered at a high level.
We also encourage society, stakeholders, leaders, and government to ensure that everyone is involved in shaping the future of our country – it is everyone’s responsibility to make things work inclusively, with sufficient support to achieve these goals.
UASA wishes all young South Africans a Happy Youth Day on 16 June.
