UASA Media Release: 05 September 2023

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

Reflecting warnings published throughout August, motorists are in for a hefty fuel price hike as announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).

As of midnight, both grades of petrol will increase by 171c/l while both grades of diesel will increase by 276c/l and 284c/l respectively. Illuminating paraffin is also set to increase by 278c/l and LPGas will increase by 226c/kg.

The considerable hike for all fuels will leave workers and motorists desperate for extra cash to get to work and back. While the general inflation rate is moving in the right direction, the higher fuel prices will counteract any relief it may bring.

UASA encourages its members and fellow South Africans to adopt fuel cost- saving precautions by heading to the pumps before midnight to save the little they can before the new price comes into effect.

UASA advises avoiding travel during rush hours, running errands at nearby locations, and combining several car trips into one.

There is no choice but to adopt our lifestyles, spend less and live within our means.
