UASA Media Release: 15 May 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA is concerned about the status of the current wage negotiations between labour and Gold Fields South Deep Gold Mine, as tensions with management have escalated during this period.

UASA, together with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), has faced challenges during the fifth round of negotiations held at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways today.

The unions have criticised the company’s conduct during the negotiations, citing the need for mutual respect and professional conduct to ensure a mutual understanding, which is especially important for the members and all workers employed by the company.

The current wage negotiations remain in a difficult position, with significant differences between labour’s demands and the company’s offer. UASA and NUM are demanding an 11% increase for employees in Categories 4 to 8 and a 9.5% increase for artisans, miners and officials. Gold Fields has tabled an offer of 7% for Categories 4 to 8 and 5.7% for artisans, miners and officials.

Labour believes the company’s offer does not adequately reflect workers’ contribution to the business’s strong financial performance amid elevated global gold prices. Additionally, workers are facing challenging financial circumstances due to rising living costs; therefore, labour believes that wage adjustments must be just, fair and sustainable.

The unions will report back to members during a mass meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 19 May 2026, where members will ultimately determine whether to accept or reject the company’s latest wage offer.
