UASA Media Release: 30 April 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

As South Africans prepare for the upcoming 2026 local government elections, UASA encourages all eligible citizens, particularly first-time voters and the youth, to ensure they are registered and able to cast their vote.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that local government elections will take place on 4 November 2026.

Municipal councils play a critical role in service delivery to citizens and communities. This is why UASA encourages all South Africans to be ready and ensure their participation in the local elections.

Leading up to the elections, thousands of voter registration stations will be opened nationwide, providing all eligible citizens the opportunity to register and prepare for the elections.

While awaiting the official registration period, UASA encourages citizens to check their voter registration status by:

• Sending an SMS to IEC on 32810.

• Visiting their local IEC office.

• Visiting the Electoral Commission website.

• Contacting the IEC contact centre on 0800 11 8000.

• Downloading the IEC mobile app and entering their ID number.

UASA calls on all South Africans to take their right to vote seriously by ensuring they are registered and ready to vote. Participation in local government elections is not only a democratic right but an opportunity to actively shape the future of local government, municipalities and districts.
