Delegates at the IndustriALL Global Union-Anglo American Global Network Meeting.
Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
The UASA Minerals Division team attended the IndustriALL Global Union–Anglo American Global Network Meeting held at the Anglo American Corporate Office in Rosebank, Johannesburg. Australia, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe were also in attendance.
The two-day meeting attended by IndustriALL affiliates highlighted workers’ challenges in the sector, sustainable and responsible practices with a strong emphasis on ethical governance and the law.
UASA’s delegation engaged actively in the discussions, reaffirming the union’s dedication to protecting the interests of workers within the evolving global mining landscape. The union emphasised the importance of collaboration and solidarity amongst the IndustriALL global affiliates to address shared challenges such as workplace safety, gender-based violence and a just transition to greener mining practices.
During the session, unions presented country reports offering a broader regional perspective on mining sector conditions. Delegates were reminded that “voluntary standards cannot and should not replace robust regulatory frameworks.” – Responsible mining standards must act as frameworks to ensure ethical, sustainable, and transparent practices in the sector—aligning with global best practices, minimizing negative impacts.
UASA is affiliated with IndustriALL Global Union.
