UASA Media Release: 30 April 2026

Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson for the trade union UASA:

As we commemorate Workers’ Day tomorrow, UASA honours all workers, labour organisations, employers and stakeholders for their invaluable contribution to the national economy and the global sphere.

Observing this Workers’ Day at a time where economic challenges remain persistent daily and beyond is an eye-opener of the difficulties that workers who keep the economy going in the face of highly unbearable cost of living and unemployment endure as challenging as it is.

Additionally, modern challenges such as mental health, technological advancements and social justice within the green economy continue to increase pressure on workers’ mental health and well-being in the work environment.

UASA emphasises the importance of green industries through Just Transition ensuring that the processes are inclusive and fair for all workers regardless of their role or position.

During this period of economic uncertainty and transformation, we urge employers, government, policy makers and investors to work collaboratively towards solutions that balance workers’ rights with economic growth and stability. Constructive engagement remains key to advancing the interests of workers. We must strive to protect the future of every worker and the sustainability of the industries.

UASA, an affiliate of the Federations of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) and IndustriALL Global Union, remains committed to improve workers’ rights, working conditions and fair labour practices in all sectors that we represent.

Workers’ and our members’ continued contribution to the workforce is what builds our economy and creates a source of living for all South Africans.

UASA honours every member that makes it possible and the union to remain relevant and responsive in a dynamic changing labour environment.

This Workers’ Day, we wish our members and all workers a meaningful and reflective Workers’ Day.
