The importance of knowing your interests and abilities is vitally important when choosing a career. In many instances the availability of jobs in your area will influence your choice of job, but ideally if you want to be good and happy at work you must find a job that is of interest to you, keeps you happy and where you can build a long term career .To be able to do this you will need to know a bit about yourself to enable you to make the right choice for you.

If you did not have career guidance in school, we suggest that you seek guidance from the Department of manpower or a technikon or university to obtain this knowledge about yourself, which in turn will help you to make an informed decision about which jobs are most suitable for you.

For those of you who are not in a position to see a career counsellor, UASA is making available a book titled School Leaver’s Guide free of charge to UASA members and their children. Read through this publication and apply yourself when you do the exercises — it will help you to find the activities that interest you and that can guide you towards choosing a career suited to you.
