Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA welcomes the declaration of 4 November 2026 as a public holiday to enable South Africans to participate in the upcoming local government elections.
The declaration, made by Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act, 1994 (Act No. 36 of 1994), provides citizens with the opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote without the added challenge of balancing work commitments and civic responsibilities.
UASA encourages its members and all eligible South Africans to make responsible use of this dedicated day by participating in the electoral process.
Local government elections play a critical role in shaping the future of communities. Beyond selecting political representatives, voters have the opportunity to elect leaders who will make decisions that directly influence the delivery of municipal services, local development, and the overall well-being of their communities.
We urge voters to approach the polls well-informed and to carefully consider their choices. This public holiday provides every eligible citizen with an opportunity to exercise one of the bases of democracy and contribute to decisions that will affect their future and that of their communities.
