Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of a one-year wage agreement in the water sector following negotiations held under the auspices of the Amanzi Bargaining Council.
The agreement was negotiated and signed by UASA alongside the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) and the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), representing employees across the sector.
In terms of the agreement, employees will receive a 6.5% salary increase effective from July 2026, followed by an additional 0.5% increase from January 2027. The housing allowance will also increase to R4,175 per month.
The parties further agreed that discussions regarding the post-retirement medical aid subsidy will continue, pending the outcome of investigations into the long-term viability of the benefit.
UASA welcomes the agreement as a positive and balanced outcome for workers in the water sector. At a time when many households continue to face increasing financial pressure, the agreement provides meaningful support to employees while contributing to labour stability within the industry.
