Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA urges members and all other workers at Sibanye-Stillwater to get vaccinated when the mining company rolls out its vaccination programme at four of its facilities – Marikana in North West, Libanon and Driefontein in Gauteng, and Beatrix in the Free State.
Sibanye Stillwater’s application to register as a primary vaccination site was approved this week, creating an opportunity for employees and members of the public to protect themselves and their families against Covid-19 infection. It will also lessen the pressure on the country’s health system.
UASA, together with the Minerals Council of South Africa and other trade unions active in the mining sector, supports the vaccine roll-out and encourages other industry players to follow suit as soon as their applications are approved.
The private vaccination initiative will go a long way to ensuring that our economy stays afloat and workers stay safe while at work.
We remind workers that they have to adhere to preventative measures even when vaccinated. Please continue to wear masks, disinfect hands and keep your distance from others.
