UASA respects and supports Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to extend the national state of disaster and the resulting lockdown for another two weeks.
Without the necessary data to know exactly how fast and in which manner the virus spreads through South Africa, we have gained nothing. UASA therefore urges all workers and South Africans in general to stay at home and work together as a nation to beat the virus.
As a trade union, we are fully aware of the devastating effects the lockdown has on our economy. We trust government has the promised strategy in place to assist business and workers in these difficult times through its intensified public health response to slow down and reduce infections, comprehensive package of economic support measures to assist businesses and individuals affected by the pandemic, and programme of increased social support to protect poor and vulnerable households.
We are pleased by the example our government leaders set by donating one third of the salaries of the president, ministers and deputy ministers to the Solidarity Fund for the next three months.
The way you lead by example fills us with pride.
