How to create a timeline for project management: Part 2

15 April 2021

Creating a project management timeline does not have to be stressful. All you need to know is the capacity of the project, how much time do you have and how many other projects do you have to attend to consecutively? Once you have all that drafted, you can now begin to create your project management timeline.

Do not underestimate the importance of timelines in a project as these assist as a step-by-step guide on what you need to do. In today’s blog, the below steps will help you to set the ultimate project timeline that is efficient and realistic for all your projects.

Set goals

Starting, you need to know what you want as the outcome of your project. Outlining your goals will help you come up with a practical timeline to achieve your projects. Communicate the goals and timelines with your client or team and make sure that everyone agrees before you start any work.

Decide timeframes

This is vital information that will help you create a project timeline and decide on timeframes for each milestone. After all, the last thing you want is an unreasonable time frame to create tension between you and your client(s). Don't underestimate or overestimate your work capacity. Communicate with your clients about the workload and your capacity, so that deadlines are not missed.

Create a project management timeline

When it comes to the creation of your project management timeline, it's a good idea to use a project planning tool. The tool will help you manage your tasks and time, and it will also help you to plan your project properly. It will also make it easier for you to develop an actionable project timeline that looks the way you want it to. There are several project management tools that you can get online and use to your advantage.

Track and analyse

The great thing about a project management timeline is that it can be tracked, analysed, and improved upon. If something is not working the way you want it to, you can revisit it and make amendments while communicating everything with your client(s). Communicating with your clients will make it easier for you to work with a relaxed mind knowing that all time frames have been agreed upon.

Review everything

Before launching your project management timeline, everyone must be on board with it. This includes yourself, your team (if you have any), and your clients. Present a draft roadmap of your project timeline to your team and ask for opinions. Does anything need adding? Does the timeframe look realistic? Once everyone is on board, you can start working towards your goals for the project and meet your deadlines.
