Appalling unemployment rate paints a dark picture

South Africa’s unemployment rate now stands at an appalling 32.6%, increased by 0.1% from 32.5% in the first quarter of 2021. This reflects the harsh reality faced by the country amid the Covid-19 pandemic and weak economy.

The Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) was published earlier today and shows the depth of the country’s unemployment crisis. A situation that needs decisive intervention to protect the right to dignity and respect – two aspects that often times disappear when people lose their income or never had one to start with.

UASA has on many occasions called on government to intervene and come up with solutions, but no tangible action plan has been produced. Instead, we now have to face our highest unemployment rate ever, a situation that is heart-breaking to millions of unemployed South Africans who live with the hope of finding employment and live a better life.

UASA reiterates its call on government to take serious note of the increased unemployment rate. It presents a dark picture for our country and economy and without proper solutions at hand, the future of our people is in jeopardy.
