UASA commends DMRE for stopping section 189s at mines

UASA is pleased to see that government is getting involved in saving jobs at the mines.

Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) Minister Gwede Mantashe’s calling for the withdrawal of Section 189 notices that were applied for during the lockdown, is a right step in preventing the job bloodbath that will occur as a result. Unions would not have adequate resources to represent their members or get mandates from them due to movement restrictions as imposed by the lockdown.

South Africa’s unemployment rate is the highest it’s ever been at 29%, with experts predicting more job losses in the coming months. Our economy simply cannot recover unless there is a moratorium on job losses.

UASA commends the DMRE and calls on other ministries to also intervene to stop retrenchment process initiated during the lockdown from taking away jobs.
