UASA applauds Mboweni initiative to curb expenses in local government

UASA welcomes Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s initiative to put an end to local government officials’ big spending habits.

National government officials should take heed and follow.

We applaud the new Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul, who kept his promise to cut spending on shiny new cars for his provincial executive, instead choosing to direct that money towards buying 63 new ambulances for the province, 27 of which have been delivered already.

Business class flights, expensive cars, free booze and year-end parties for mayors and all municipal officials and politicians are an unnecessary waste of taxpayer’s hard-earned money and should have been nipped in the bud years ago.

With South Africa’s economy in dire straits and too many of its people mired in poverty, Saul and Mboweni are on the right track. For government officials on whatever level to shroud themselves in luxury while compatriots battling to survive is a heartless crime.
