UASA welcomes South Africa’s move to alert level 1 of the Covid-19 prevention measures.
It is about time South Africa restarts all economic activities to kick-start economic activity and growth. Too many people lost jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions and were left in distress as they had to take care of their families.
We are content that the government has managed to secure 11 million vaccine doses from Johnson and Johnson, as this will help save more lives and have our people protected against the virus.
With new infections, admissions to hospital and deaths down significantly and steadily declining, we also welcome the opening of the land border posts and airports for international travel. This will increase economic activities as we try to rebuild our economy.
As many are still without jobs, UASA urges companies to restart full operations and get people back to work.
We hope the move to level 1 will boost all affected companies, specifically state-owned companies like Denel, where workers have been without full salaries since July last year. Hopefully, the full return to economic activity will help salvage the situation for companies in deep trouble.
Once again, we call on South Africans to buy and use locally made products to boost the industries directly affected by the pandemic. We need a sustainable South Africa for all.
UASA reminds its members and other South Africans to continue being cautious and vigilant. We cannot afford a third wave resulting in South Africa going back to strict lockdown restrictions again. Wear a face mask at all times, wash and sanitise your hands, and practice social distance. Alert level 1 does not mean we are Covid free; the virus is still with us.
