UASA is shocked and horrified at the untimely and violent death of Simphiwe Kubekha,
regional general manager of Harmony Gold’s Tshepong and Phakisa mining operations near Welkom in the Free State.
Speculation that Kubheka was attacked and murdered by illegal gold miners or so-called Zama-Zamas speaks to how unemployment, poverty, greed and weak leadership work together to push South Africa ever deeper into anarchy.
We are enraged about this murder on a senior mining employee, apparently because he was fearlessly working towards eradicating corruption in this industry.
UASA conveys its heartfelt condolences to Kubheka’s family and friends.
South Africa’s rampant illegal gold mining must be brought to a stop soonest. We commend Harmony Gold for trying to do just that in recent days. We can no longer afford illegal miners threatening the industry and bringing harm to hard-working and responsible employees.
We urge government to take a strong stance on this matter without delay.
