The incremental lifting of the national Covid-19 lockdown is good news and a wise, though difficult decision by government.
The revised regulations mean that more people can now become active in the economy again to earn a living for their families while at workplaces measures to ensure workers’ safety will be put in place.
South Africa is in no position to lock down indefinitely. With our economy already in dire straits before the virus made its appearance, we need to gradually normalize the situation. It is a difficult decision that can only work when the most vulnerable are protected, while the stronger workers surge forward to save the country from bankruptcy.
UASA looks forward to the results of Cabinet’s discussion due on Monday 20 April, on a final socio-economic recovery plan for after the lockdown.
We urge all South Africans to strictly follow the existing lockdown rules to prevent the virus from spreading.
