UASA is reassured that our courts remain independent and robust as confirmed yesterday by the ruling that the lockdown regulations of level 3 and 4 are irrational and unconstitutional.
The court ruling also reconfirms that in a democracy we should never stop questioning the decisions a government makes. Putting the people and the rights of the people first should be the ultimate aim of our courts and the government.
UASA demands that the South African government act responsibly and in line with our constitution in all matters, at all times. Introducing regulations that impact on people’s rights with little or no regards to the extent they are affected is unjustifiable.
Citizens’ constitutional rights and best interests must be top of mind at all times when making decisions.
The government should take expert advice when they address the court ruling and present a well-considered and rational response within the 14-day timeframe prescribed.
We can build a better life for all South Africans as long as the government engages with credible persons and institutions, whether from business, labour, society, or any other sphere, to assist the country in decisively, constitutionally, and successfully navigating its way through the Covid-19 crisis.
