The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns have hard hit the South African entertainment industry. UASA is most concerned about the drastic effect on the sector and all who work in it.
The South African Guild of Actors (SAGA) is one of UASA’s most affected member sectors, and we call on government to consider the country’s actors, together with the entire entertainment community, in terms of their operations. Since the inception of lockdowns, the hardest hit in the industry is the live performance sector where the majority of entertainment personnel have not been able to work and have had to survive on personal savings and some government relief funds.
The entertainment industry plays an essential role in society. Entertainers reveal truths that are either universal or hidden and help people view the world from a different or new perspective. They comfort us, make us laugh and think differently.
With level 1 reinstated, most industries are back to business as usual, but earning an income is still a considerable challenge in the arts and entertainment world. Of course, we are cautious of a third wave, but we urge government to keep in mind that even on level 1, some sectors industries cannot resume full operations and make up for the lost time.
